We've probably all heard it before - step out of your comfort zone. But what is that actually, the comfort zone, and how can we leave it? Why does it make us grow beyond ourselves?

Real life begins outside our comfort zones. However, making it happen is difficult because we all like to stay in our comfort zone. In this article we will show you how to break out of your comfort zone into life.

What actually is the comfort zone?

Actions that are in your comfort zone make you feel good. The consequences of your action are known to you. You know with great certainty what will happen and you know that the consequences of your action are comfortable and safe.

Where your comfort zone begins and ends is not always clear. Rather, it is a smooth transition. Within the comfort zone, the body's alarm functions are deactivated. The comfort zone, and staying in it, often describes an entire way of life. Those who have settled into the comfort zone rarely dare to venture new things and engage in new experiences.

While some people have little trouble leaving their comfort zone, for others it takes a lot of effort.

Why should you leave your comfort zone?

Why should one leave the comfort zone at all? It is "warm", protected and safe, the body feels comfortable.

If you stay in your comfort zone, you will have a hard time growing personally. Because personal growth takes place primarily outside of your comfort zone. Only there you are forced to overcome new challenges and gain new experiences. In the so-called growth zone you leave your comfort zone and acquire new knowledge. Your personal comfort zone expands through such behavior.

The comfort zone grows faster the more often you enter the growth zone and master challenges there.

What are the positive effects outside the comfort zone?

  • personal development
  • better physical health
  • more happiness and fulfillment
  • more flexibility in unexpected situations
  • Keeping up in a changing world

Where does the formation of a comfort zone come from?

To understand the comfort zone and how it is formed, we must first understand our brain. In the body, the brain is the organ that consumes the most energy. That is why the brain tries to conserve energy. For one's survival, it is best to do what the brain already knows how to do, this way energy can be conserved. This is the reason for creating a comfort zone. It increases the likelihood of survival.

How do you get out of your comfort zone?

Now that we know why it's important to break out of your comfort zone, it's about how best to do it. Because it happens quickly and you find yourself in a routine. A comfortable life without much excitement. The longer you stay contentedly in your comfort zone, the harder it is to get out of it.

That's why it helps to break out regularly. Here we show you a few tips that can make breaking out easier.

Motivate yourself to break out!

Motivation is the key to development. It takes a lot of motivation to get out of your comfort zone. Good reasons and goals can be motivating. Do you already have the right goals in your life? Hardly anyone will leave the comfort zone without reasons, without goals, without a proper motivation.

Find your personal motivation. Is it in goals, in career, in health or in an event? Become aware of your personal motivation. Why do you do something? Start with the why!

Maybe a list or a picture can help you? Find ways to remind yourself of your motivation every day.

Keep routines, but also change them

Our daily lives are simplified by routines. There are routines that can be outside our comfort zone, such as getting up early (learn more about that here ) and thus moving us to new experiences. But there are also routines that are in our comfort zone, such as watching several hours of television in the evening. With these routines, we need courage to change.

Even a small change can have a big impact on our lives. How about starting the day earlier? Or working more effectively with Deep Work (read more here)?

Face your fears

What are you afraid of? Have you ever asked yourself what you are personally afraid of? Our fears keep us trapped in our comfort zone, even if we don't always consciously know it.

Ask yourself: What am I afraid of and write down your fears on a piece of paper. In the next step, you can write down what the worst case scenario is if your fears come to pass. Often this method helps us put our fears into perspective. Face your fears and step out of your comfort zone.

Take responsibility

Taking responsibility is often uncomfortable. Those who take responsibility often step out of their comfort zone, they are forced to do so. Take responsibility and develop yourself further. If you always shirk responsibility, whether at work or in your private life, you will find it difficult to leave your comfort zone.

Responsibility brings joy and happiness. If you dare to do otherwise, others will take responsibility for you and your chances for further development will be blocked.

Stand by your actions

Outside of your comfort zone, you are at the mercy of criticism from your peers. Sometimes this can be the reason why we don't leave the comfort zone. You would like to change something, but don't dare? Then realize that you don't have to make your peers happy. You made a decision to grow and go into the development zone? It's up to you: stand by your decision and your action.

Avoid permanent stress

Get out of the comfort zone and into the growth zone, this is where you can develop your personality and move forward in your life. The growth zone, where you feel easily overwhelmed, should not become a permanent state that lasts day and night. It is important to return to the comfort zone regularly in order to recover.

Conclusion - Looser through life!

If you leave your comfort zone regularly, you have to adapt to new situations, grow and learn. More flexibility and freedom is the answer. You also want to grow and develop? Then leave your comfort zone and start living!
